According to a study by the University of Chile, two major causes of Structural Vulnerability of Buildings were detected.

The first, mainly associated with structures designed without adequate sismorresistentes criteria, or the deterioration of the buildings. This condition not only affects relatively ancient structures (prior to 1930) but also some newly built, where it met only the minimum requirements set by the Chilean Code of Structural Design. Keep in mind that the current design codes are designed to protect human life, so the criteria and damage control services, are defined indirectly only to frequent earthquakes.

The second cause is associated with the structural system that preferred from the point of view of use and architectural design of large plants, without heavy obstruction and difficult to modify (structural walls). These construction systems, which are considered very desirable in some cases as more flexible use of a building allowing amendment to the changing needs of the projects (such as the type, industrial, hospital, etc.) generate buildings at risk of deformation and structural damage.
